Where it is
For this guide the area runs south of U.S. 17 from Six Mile Road northeast to about Porchers Bluff Road, down to the marsh along Hamlin Sound. The boundary lines are ours, drawn along those roads; the names come from the town. Main roads are U.S. 17, Rifle Range Road, Six Mile Road and Hamlin Road. OpenStreetMap places Palmetto Fort here, and the town’s land use plan names the Six-Mile Marketplace and old Laing Middle School site as a hub.
The report’s history appendix says that after the Civil War, land on former plantations such as Hamlin was given or sold to people who had been enslaved there. They called their community Liberty Hill, later renamed Six Mile for its distance from the village of Mount Pleasant. The corner of Rifle Range and Six Mile roads is known locally as Mazyck’s Corners. Sweetgrass basket weaving “continues as it has for generations,” the report says, and basket stands still dot Six Mile Road, Rifle Range Road and U.S. 17 north. Laing High School opened on U.S. 17 in Six Mile in 1953.
The Hamlin community, which the report pairs with Seven Mile, formed on Copahee Plantation land and came into African American ownership in 1881. James Hibben Hamlin sold 30 lots of about 10 acres each at Hamlin Beach, between Copahee Sound and Boone Hall. The task force recommended a special area plan for the “Cultural Core” of Boone Hall, Hamlin Farms, Six Mile and Seven Mile.
