Where it is

For this guide the area is the town’s land north of U.S. 17 east of Faison Road, which is Carolina Park, plus the town’s land on the southeast side of U.S. 17 from about Porchers Bluff Road to the town limit. The boundary lines are ours; the names come from the town. Main roads are Carolina Park Boulevard, Park Avenue Boulevard, Faison Road, Gadsdenville Road and U.S. 17. Wando High, Carolina Park Elementary and the Wando Mount Pleasant branch library are all inside the area.

The town’s land use plan names Carolina Park a community-scale hub and marks smaller hubs at Pepper Plantation and the White Hall Terrace community center. Its zoning map has a Ten Mile mixed-use overlay and a separate 10 Mile Community Overlay District along U.S. 17.

The town’s Settlement Communities report says the Ten Mile community lies “in the northern section of Mount Pleasant alongside and east of Highway 17.” Its first settlers came from Goat Island, Capers Island and nearby places, and it grew after hurricanes destroyed parts of Capers Island. The report lists an oyster factory, a sugar mill, stores and farms in its past, and the task force asked the town to keep working with the community on sidewalks for Gadsdenville Road.
