Water and sewer

Mount Pleasant Waterworks runs water and sewer for the town; it is separate from the town government. Request a start, stop or transfer online or in person at 1619 Rifle Range Road, weekdays. Start and stop requests are processed within two business days. If you are buying a home, the seller must first ask Waterworks to stop service in their name; coordinate before you apply. Phone: 843-884-9626.

Power and natural gas

Most of the town is served by Dominion Energy South Carolina, which also supplies natural gas; use its start, stop or move service page. Some addresses are served by Berkeley Electric Cooperative; its service territory page checks yours. Outage numbers and maps are in our power outages guide.

Internet

Providers that publish service pages for Mount Pleasant include Xfinity and AT&T. Availability varies by street, so enter your address on each provider’s page before you sign up.

Trash, recycling and yard debris

The town picks up garbage and yard debris; Charleston County collects recycling. Roll carts and missed pickups go to Public Services, 843-849-2022. Pickup days, holidays and bulk items are in our trash and recycling guide.

Driver’s license and car tags

The SCDMV gives new residents 45 days to get a South Carolina license and 45 days to transfer vehicle registration, according to its moving to SC page.

  • License: visit an SCDMV branch with proof of identity and date of birth, your Social Security number and proof of your South Carolina address (two proofs for a REAL ID), pass a vision test and surrender your old license.
  • Registration: South Carolina makes you pay the county’s vehicle property tax first. Bring your out-of-state title and the original paid property tax receipt from the Charleston County Treasurer to the SCDMV, per its vehicle moving page. The county Auditor, 843-958-4200, creates the motor vehicle tax bills.

Property taxes and the homestead exemption

If you own and live in your home, apply to the Charleston County Assessor for the 4% legal residence rate, which is not automatic; the deadline is typically Jan. 15. Owners 65 and older, totally disabled or legally blind may also qualify for the homestead exemption through the Auditor. Rates, due dates and appeals are in our property taxes guide.

Schools

Mount Pleasant’s public schools are run by the Charleston County School District. Find your zoned schools, calendars and report cards in our schools guide.

Voting

Register with the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections. Polling places, early voting and deadlines are in our voting guide.

Pets

Dogs must be leashed in every public area of town, and dogs and cats over six months old must wear a collar or harness with a rabies vaccination tag from a licensed veterinarian, the town’s Leash Up MTP page says. Off-leash areas are listed in our parks and trails guide.

Building, renovating or opening a business

Permits, zoning and the town’s limit on new residential permits are in our building permits and zoning guide; business licenses are in our new businesses guide.

What this means for you

  • Call Waterworks early: a home sale needs the seller’s stop request first.
  • Put the 45-day SCDMV clock in your calendar, and pay the county vehicle tax before you go.
  • Apply for the 4% rate as soon as you own and live in the home.
