Berkeley Electric Cooperative members

Report an outage on the cooperative’s automated line, 1-855-938-3615, or online through SmartHub. Berkeley Electric asks members not to assume a neighbor has already called. If you are calling from a phone not listed on the account, have the account number ready, and say if you heard a loud bang, saw damaged equipment, or your neighbors still have power. The outage center has the rest.

Trees and power lines

Most outages in a storm start with a limb on a line. Dominion trims trees along its lines on a schedule, and the town publishes a live Dominion Energy tree work map on its utility undergrounding page so you can see when crews are due on your street. For streets with major work planned, Dominion notifies every affected property at least one week ahead, the town says.

Lines going underground

The town’s Utility Undergrounding Program moves overhead lines below ground with Dominion, to cut storm outages and protect the tree canopy. The projects listed by the town:

Project Where Status, as published by the town
Mathis Ferry Phase III Muirhead Road, Wingo Way, Grands Avenue Under construction since March 2026, finishing by the end of 2026; $2,152,477, town share $1,076,238
Ben Sawyer corridor Rifle Range Road to the Dominion substation near Center Street Extension In design; construction expected in 2027, pending easements
Muirhead Drive Mathis Ferry Road to the Hobcaw and East Hobcaw intersection In design; construction expected in 2027, pending easements

Neighborhoods can ask for their own project. Those are started by residents, need Town Council approval and are paid for through a special fee district; the town and Dominion generally share the cost of the first feasibility study.

Storm season

Hurricane season runs to Nov. 30. Charleston County Emergency Management’s hurricane advice: keep flashlights and extra batteries, not candles or kerosene lamps; turn the refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings ahead of a storm and open them only when you must; and if the power goes out, turn off major appliances to reduce the surge when it comes back. Our hurricane prep guide covers evacuation zones and shelters.
